When Jordane and I realised we needed an extra trainer before we opened the doors of 360Athletic, Tara Ingles was the first person I reached out to. On top of being great banter & having excellent taste in workout tunes, Tara is easily amongst the top fitness instructors I’ve ever worked alongside. Her lifting technique is better than most, which is why we are very excited to announce her upcoming lifting workshop. If you have never lifted, book in. If you lift a lot, a technique refresh from the very best can never hurt.
From figure skating to Olympic Level competing, here are a few of the things we found out about Tara during her interview process…
Have you always been into fitness, when did you get into the industry?
Growing up I was always active and involved in various sports such as figure skating, speed skating and equestrian. However, it wasn’t until I was 19, arrived back to Oz from a year travelling around Europe and had put on more weight than what I was used to that I really became interested in fitness. Initially, I decided to do my PT qualification out of personal interest without realising it would develop into what has now been my career for almost 11 years. It led me to learn new sports, such as Muay Thai and Olympic Weightlifting, which have both been huge turning points for me in how I approach my training and, more importantly, my coaching and programming style.
What are your personal fitness goals and what are your greatest achievements?
Currently, I am purely working on building my strength all round, particularly building on my squats, deadlifts, overhead press and pull-ups! I had A LOT of time off last year when I had stepped out of the fitness industry and into a corporate environment. As a result, I lost so much of my strength and conditioning. I have spent most of this year getting back into my groove and building back to a level I’m really happy with so come 2019 I’ll be looking at doing something a little more competitive!
My proudest achievement so far is winning a bronze medal in 2015 at my first Olympic Weightlifting competition back home in Australia!
What is your approach to training?
Training for me has always been such a great outlet and has always been my happy place! Attention to detail, regardless of what I’m learning, is always at the forefront of my mind. Whether it’s purely strength training or Muay Thai or Olympic lifting I want to make sure I learn the discipline to the best of my ability whether I’m taking that sport to a competitive level or not. No matter what your goal is, be it weight loss, strength & fitness, or something more sports specific, it’s good practice to come to your sessions with a solid focus on what you want out of it.
We all have off days but small consistent progress over time will get you amazing results 🙂
What is the worst/funniest thing you’ve seen in the gym?
I’ve seen a fair few treadmill fails/disasters in the gym! Making sure a treadmill is turned off before trying to step on or slowing it down enough before trying to step off would be a solid word of advice haha!
Whats the best thing about being a PT/fitness coach?
The best thing is getting to spend time with people and coach them! I’m constantly surrounded by people who are always looking to improve themselves and reach new goals (both clients and colleagues) and I get to be a part of the process. I truly couldn’t care if someone is a beginner or an experienced athlete, I love working with people who want to put the work and effort in and even better is when they see and recognise their progress at the end of it all!
What’s different about 360athletic and why do you love being part of our fitness community?
The fitness world can be pretty intimidating for some people especially those at a beginner level. I think the best thing about the 360 culture is that we want to welcome absolutely EVERYONE. We want people to feel completely comfortable to start their fitness journey with us no matter what level they are. As I said before, the most inspiring part of being a coach is seeing the EFFORT people bring to the table! That’s what I believe we encourage more than anything. Egos are left outside, 100% effort when you come to your training, and the only comparison you’re making is to your own progress 🙂
